OUR BREWING STORY GOES BACK TO 1996 WHEN PATRICK MORTON AND HIS FATHER HUGH DECIDED TO PURSUE THEIR MUTUAL LOVE OF FINE BEER AND PUT THEIR FAITH AND MONEY INTO CREATING THEIR VERY OWN BREWERY.
Since 1996, our brewery has grown steadily and we now make over 200 brewers’ barrels (that’s 800 of your typical casks you’d find in a pub!) per week of up to nine different beers at any one time. As well as our core range of five cask beers and one keg, we release a special brew every single week, so keep our brewers very busy.
To produce our high quality beers, we seek the very best ingredients and pay particular close attention to the brewing process. In our recipes, we mainly use pale malts and have searched far and wide for the best. Our hops come from not just the UK but also much further afield. We don't make it easy but then we do like an exciting adventure and we love coming up with new and exciting recipes. We have a close-knit, passionate team here who LOVE beer in all it’s forms, and this makes a huge difference in sharing ideas and means that the beers we create come about from a collaborative process.
We have established Moonshine as a very popular local beer accounting for 50% of our output and all of our regular and special beers have a following somewhere - sometimes in the most unusual places. Our weekly special beers (especially our Dr Morton’s range) are so highly sought after they barely touch the sides and more often than not are all spoken for in less than three weeks!
In the current “beer boom” it’s no surprise that the demand and therefore competition for ingredients such as hops is increasing exponentially. Here at Abbeydale we are well known for our hoppy pale ales and for the moment are lucky enough to be in a position to continue this! However we’re also keen to experiment and are in the process of developing a range of beers well suited to the fast-paced modern market, including a growing keg offering, led by our first core keg, Heathen. Check out our beer pages for more information on what’s currently available.
Our reputation has been built on making consistently good beer, looking after our customers and not taking ourselves too seriously. As we move forward, we can't think of any reason why any of this should change!
